Roger Goula is a London based composer and multi-instrumentalist whose range of original works spans across albums, film scores, music for dance, TV, theatre and art installation. Coming from a contemporary classical background, Roger’s work has developed into an experimental approach of classical chamber and orchestral music blent with electronics. Inspired by renaissance and baroque music, as well as by minimalism, and looking at the language of electronic music and sampling, his compositions perform complexity through repetition of minimal elements and emotional transporting textures. Roger’s solo debut album 'Overview Effect' was released in 2016 by Cognitive Shift in partnership with One Little Indian. His solo work was acclaimed as "mind blowing" by Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC 6 Music and much-celebrated nationally and internationally. The music from the album has been inspiring and widely used across artistic platforms including the The Last Race, the feature film by acclaimed American visual artist and filmmaker Michael Dweck which premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2018.

He is also a film composer working on award winning films (fiction and documentary) and television programmes. In 2017, Roger worked on the second season of ITV/Netflix flagship series The Frankenstein Chronicles (Rainmak Films), the BAFTA nominated BBC docudrama Against The Law (BBC Studios), the last ever two episodes of the legendary BBC series Inspector George Gently (Company Pictures), the BBC documentary Diana, 7 Days (Sandpaper Film) and The Betrayed Girls (Sandpaper Film), both directed by Henry Singer, the feature film Access All Areas (Camden Films) and the danish feature documentary Stay Behind: My Grandfather's Secret War (Bullitt Film). He was also part of the ASCAP Composers Spotlight at Sundance 2018. 

 

Roger has composed music for award-winning documentaries such as the BAFTA Nominated The Hard Stop (Ga Films) directed by George Amponsah, the BIFA Winner Next Goal Wins (Archer’s Mark), BIFA Nominated Louise Osmond’s Versus: The Life And Films Of Ken Loach (Sixteen Films). Other feature films he has scored include Jet Trash (Sums Film and Media), feature film Brand New-U (Hot Property Film) and Tiger House (Altitude Film Entertainment). 

 

Roger collaborated with Dickson Mbi in partnership with the Akran Khan Dance Company on a new choreography 'DUENDE' which premiered at Sadler's Wells in June 2018. He has also been part of the creative team for the company's most recent work, 'ENOWATE' which will premiere at the Barbican in April 2021. His other collaborations include: Hartford Symphony, LSO, Tulsa Ballet, V&A, The Experimental Funktion, CCCB Barcelona, Gärtnerplatz Theater, The Place. His film work was nominated to BAFTA and BIFA and shown in festivals including Venice Film Festival, Toronto, Sundance, Tribecca, BFI, CPH:DOX, Tribecca, IDFA and Rotterdam among many other. Roger Goula trained as classical guitarist in Barcelona and graduated in music composition from Goldsmiths College, London. He specialised in film music obtaining an MA from the National Film and Television School and studied composition with pioneering English composer Michael Finnissy.
